6 Electric Fence Installation Mistakes

Over the years we have had customers tell us that their electric fence charger was not working properly and that they need a warranty replacement or repair, whatever the scenario happened to be. Sometimes this was the case, but many other times there were other problems with the fence rather than with the electric fence charger.

The challenge for us was always to convince the person who built the fence (our customer) that the problem lay not in the electric fence charger that he bought but in the fact that he had improperly installed a part or his entire fence which led to the circumstances that he was in. This saved him money if he took our advice and did what we recommended whether it was adding a ground rod or two to the grounding system of his fence or if it meant that he needed to check his fence for bad insulators.

Other times we heard about unscrupulous fence installers who would capitalize on the opportunity to sell the erring customer an even bigger fencer when the electric fence energizer that they had would have been adequate had they properly diagnosed the problem instead. So this lead to the following list of most common things to check for when your electric fence energizer seems to be on holidays. All the proper supplies can be purchased online at localfarmsupply.com

Poor Grounding

It just doesn’t work to skimp on ground rods. Depending on the size of the fence and the soil conditions you may need up to three 8′ ground rods. If you don’t have a properly grounded fence you may as well throw away the energizer too! It’s both or none!

Fence Overgrowth

Wet grass and other vegetation growing in your fence line will rob your fence of its electric charge if they come in contact with your fence

Bad Insulators

Poor quality insulators crack after too much exposure to the sun. Make sure the ones you buy are UV resistant.

Solar Panels Improperly Installed

Solar panels need to be installed at the right angle to the sun to reach their full potential. Don’t guess, read the owner’s manual and do it right.

Staples

Don’t drive in staples too tight. If the staple splits the plastic fin tube and touches the electric fence wire this effectively creates a ground fault.

Inadequate Fence Charger

Sometimes the electric fence charger is just too small for the job at hand. Maybe it used to work but that new fence addition was too much for it to handle.

Electric Fence Posts

For those of you new to the basics of electric fences built using wooden posts, the process is started using a post pounder to drive the fence posts into the ground. The following video shows how this is done easily using a hydraulic post pounder. This is a much easier way of pounding posts than by using a shovel! Other fences are built using poly or metal posts. These are also good solutions for permanent or semi-permanent electric fencing. Metal and poly electric fence posts can easily be pushed into the ground using only your weight to drive them in. Good electric fence posts also include some built in design to make the “step-in” process even easier by building a “step” right into the post. These can be purchased from Localfarmsupply.com at prices that are hard to beat! They have a large selection and electric fence posts are always in stock so order today!

Unigizer

A line or battery energizer, compatible with permanent, temporary and solar electric fence installations.

Bi-polar operation

The Speedrite 6000 and 6000i units have the bi-polar operation feature allowing you to reduce the fence voltage on any one wire.

The benefits of bi-polar operation:

  • Animals will receive a warning shock of up to 5 kV if it touches one wire, and up to10 kV if it becomes more aggressive and touches two wires.
  • The breakdown of insulators is slower, and the chance of sparking is reduced because only 5 kV is on each wire. This is important for dry areas where there could be a fire risk.
  • Useful in low soil conductivity areas, as the earth connection is less important when an animal is touching two wires

Cyclic Wave Technology

Cyclic Wave technology gives a cleaner and more efficient pulse that has a higher output energy than a standard
energizer. This means more voltage at the far end of your fence line for greater stock control.

Earth Monitoring

The 6000i has a smart function called the ‘earth monitor’. A red LED will illuminate whenever the earth voltage exceeds 800 V and by checking the LCD the user can determine at a glance the actual voltage being lost in the earth.
